Smith Tennis Falls to Wellesley in Season Opener

Smith tennis lost to Wellesley College 9-0 in their season opener on Saturday, Sept. 15. By the end of the day, Smith fell to 0-1 on the season, as well as 0-1 in NEWMAC play. Wellesley went up to 2-0 in the season, and 1-0 in the NEWMAC.

The day started with Ilona Miller ’13, a member of the tennis team, singing a wonderful and melodious rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. 

Bayla Weick ’15 played Erica Choo at No. 1 singles before the tiebreaker led to a 6-3, 2-6, 8-10 loss for her. At No. 2 Jordan Dubin ’15 lost to Diana Granger 2-6 and 1-6, and at No. 3, Seema Samawi ’15 lost to SoJung Lee 0-6, 0-6. At No. 4, sophomore Haruka Shimoto’s game against Catherine Matulis ended with a 0-6, 0-6 loss, as did junior Kyle Gouchoe-Hanas’ game with Aby Esrock, which ended with a score of 1-6, 0-6. Ashley Burke’s ’16 No. 5 match against Suzanne Barth ended with a 0-6 loss for Burke.

Wellesley also won all three matches in the doubles; Lee and Granger defeated Weick and Samawi 0-8, Esrock and Veronica Lin won against Lindsay Roth and Gouchoe-Hanas by the same score and Matulus and Barth took the victory 2-8 against Jana Chan and Shimoto. 
Smith tennis will next play Babson College on Sept. 22 for a 1 p.m. NEWMAC match up.
