Smith students celebrate Mountain Day

President Christ announced Mountain Day on Tuesday, canceling classes and allowing students and faculty to enjoy New England's fall weather. See page 3 for Mountain Day photos.



Harvard eliminates early admission, sets a universal deadline for applicants

Harvard University will no longer accept early applications beginning in fall 2007. The university created a universal deadline of Jan. 1 for all undergraduate Crimson hopefuls. The change was prompted by concerns that early admissions policies put low income applicants, who may wait to compare financial aid packages from their prospective schools, at a disadvantage. Harvard's action is causing waves across the nation. Several days after Harvard's announcement, Princeton University followed suit.



Red Cross in urgent need of blood donors

The American Red Cross Blood Services, Northeast Division, announced this week the urgency of the area's blood supply situation. In Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut, donations have declined. The Red Cross, which has experienced shortages in other parts of the country, is unable to fulfill the requests of many hospitals. Possible donors, who must be 17-years-old and weigh at least 110 lbs., are urged to call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE and make an appointment.
