This weekend "The Many Flavors of Dharma," a festival of Buddhism within the Pioneer Valley, will bring together nearly 50 local Buddhist groups in Smith's Campus Center. Hosted by the Northampton Shin Buddhist Sangha, the festival will celebrate the local influences of Buddhism, which is fitting in an area that is home to nearly every major denomination of Buddhist thought. Needless to say, this type of gathering doesn't happen very often!

The festival will take place on Friday, Sept. 19 from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. in the Carroll Room with music and dance performances. It will feature everything from hip-hop to African dance to Taiko drumming, as well as several other Buddhism-themed performances, ranging from the modern to the traditional.

On Saturday, Sept. 30, the festival will continue starting at 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., this time with workshops and panels, as well as a continuation of the previous day's music and dance. Like the dance performances, the workshops and panels will cover an array of topics both traditional - such as meditation, chanting and Tibetan medicine - and contemporary - including dharma-based environmentalism, social activism and peacemaking. Information tables will be set up around the Campus Center, and all of the events are free. Whether you are Buddhist or not, the festival should provide an interesting and enlightening change of pace from studying.
