Be Your Own PET released their self-titled first album in June, which consisted of 15 two-to-three-minute songs. Even though the whole album is just over thirty minutes, they concentrate all of their sound and energy into rocking hard. Their sound may be quite overwhelmingly erratic for some, but for those who can appreciate the talents of the "riot grrl" movement and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, it is a delight and a half. Jemina Pearl, the ringleader, manages to put every ounce of herself into every song. Those who do not bother exploring the rough side of their music will not discover that their lyrics have a nuance of wit which can be misunderstood. For the faint of heart, I suggest "Adventure," which is a more accessible song with an alternative rock sound.
On Oct. 1, they will be hitting the Pearl St. Night Club, which will be a must-see show for any music lover. Even if you do not like Be Your Own PET's music, their live performances give you a rush comparable to skydiving. Jemina Pearl moves like Iggy Pop and howls like Karen O and by the end of the night, it is almost guaranteed that Jemina and the other band members will land in a pile. Tickets are $10 in advance and $13 at the door.
