Greetings from '06-'07 Student Gov't officers
Issue date: 9/14/06 Section: Opinions

We would like to welcome all new students to Smith, as well as all returning students. As the Student Government Association (SGA) cabinet, it is our duty to represent the student body and to act as a liaison among the students, the faculty and the community. We encourage you to stop by the SGA office. Know that we are committed to serving you, and we will listen to your voice. We are here as your representatives.
The SGA is a large organization comprised of Smith students, and created to address student concerns. There are numerous branches of the SGA, including the Senate, the Judicial Branch, the Academic Honor Board, class cabinets, house presidents and house councils and all funded student organizations. We urge you to get involved and to share all of your unique perspectives on student life.
Senate is an especially great way to contribute to life at Smith. This student legislative body traditionally has been a place for new students to become active in Smith leadership. However, we would like to equally encourage returning students to join Senate and to use your knowledge of Smith culture to tackle complex issues on campus. Engage in the Smith community; run for a position during your first house meeting! In addition, the Elections and Appointments committee (EnA) will be distributing information about college committees to which you can be appointed - apply!
Your SGA cabinet is comprised of representatives from the groups mentioned above. Your SGA President is Meg Ambrus, mambrus@smith.edu, who serves as the overall liaison between all students and all members of the college administration. Mary Claire Opler, mopler@smith.edu, is the Vice President of the SGA and the President of the Senate. Adrienne Lee, alee2@smith.edu, is your SGA Secretary and keeps the SGA organized. Jan Arbaugh, jarbaugh@smith.edu, is the SGA Treasurer and is responsible for the SGA's funds. Margaret MacRae, mmacrae@smith.edu, is the Academic Honor Board Chair; she leads the board that handles all issues of academic dishonesty. McKay LeBlanc, mleblanc@smith.edu, is the Curriculum Committee Chair, and her responsibility is to bring your academic concerns and ideas to members of the administration. Kamille King, kking@smith.edu, is the Diversity Committee Chair; she brings student ideas and concerns regarding diversity issues to conversations within the SGA and the broader Smith community. Molly McCadden, mmccadde@smith.edu, is the Chair of the House Presidents Association and represents house community matters. Michele Chapdelaine, mchapdel@smith.edu, is the Chair of the Judicial Board; she represents the board that hears cases relating to infractions of the social code of conduct. Devin Burke, dburke@smith.edu, is your Organization Resources Committee Chair; she and the ORC allocate funds to and charter student organizations. Jill Flynn, jflynn@smith.edu, and Kelly Samuels, ksamuels@smith.edu, are the Co-Presidents of the Ada Comstock Scholars. Ali Woodruff, awoodruf@smith.edu, is the Senior Class President and Ayesha Siddiqui, asiddiqu@smith.edu, is the Junior Class President. Class presidents lead their cabinets and plan events throughout the year. Currently the first-year and sophomore classes need presidents to lead their respective class cabinets - run!
Now that you've heard about us, we want to hear your thoughts. Visit us in the SGA office; we look forward to meeting you in person.
Sincerely,
Your SGA Cabinet
