In my day, back-to-school shopping was an annual letdown. I was lucky to get some glue sticks and Keds; I got none of those really neat, light-up L.A. Gear shoes or Trapper Keepers the cool kids had. You might as well have handed me a shirt that said, "My mom took me back-to-school shopping, and all I got was this lousy T-shirt."

Things liven up once you can do it yourself. Check out these local picks:

Segue into fall with a fully-lined Ben Sherman track jacket ($99, 25 Central, Thornes Marketplace).

Save desk space by storing notebooks and extra paper in hanging magazine racks. An added bonus: the colorful holders are also magnetic. A twist on the mundane, Kikkerland's bone-shaped paper clips are cute, and cost only three bones. Hipster stencils allow you to decorate surfaces with images of turntables, cassettes and boom boxes ($3.95-$23.95, Essentials, 88 Main St.).

With a mix of animal graphics and cheery patterns, totes and pouches by Saltbox are anything but ordinary ($22-$53, The Artisan Gallery, 162 Main St.).

Try an Ergopad to lighten your load-the rubber contraption fits onto the straps of messenger bags for added comfort ($6.95, Harlow Luggage, 196 Main St.).
