Summer construction projects in varying states
The Smith campus was abuzz with activity throughout the summer as the college underwent several changes.
College Hall has been completely renovated, with many offices moved to different locations in the building. The Class Deans' offices are all located on the first floor. Though building changes continue, College Hall is open.
The residents of Baldwin House moved into their newly-renovated house on Friday, September 1. The renovations include new suite-style living arrangements, new bathrooms and lounges on upper floors.
A new house for Ada Comstock scholars was also recently completed. The house is named Conway House, in recognition of former Smith president Jill Ker Conway.
Five Colleges unveil new library system
On Monday, August 28, the Five Colleges switched to a new online library catalog. The new system offers several benefits that the old system did not have, including saving searches to personal accounts and receiving alerts when new materials of interest become available. The system will also allow users to search all five libraries simultaneously, while previously, the University of Massachusetts library was only accessible through a separate search.
"This new management software is easier to use and vastly increases the libraries' abilities to accommodate our users' research needs," said Chris Loring, director of libraries at Smith. "I think those in the college community who use the online system to search for and acquire Five College library materials will be pleased."
