SGA President Meg Ambrus '07

For Meg Ambrus '07, her future goals currently have nothing to do with politics; in fact, she is interested in education. However, it only seemed natural for her to run last spring to be this year's SGA President. Her love for Smith came through in everything she spoke about. The people, campus, houses and classes all came up again and again and she always spoke with a heartfelt glow about them.

This art history major who calls Parsons House home has been involved in SGA all four of her years at Smith. After bouncing around from activity to activity her first year, Ambrus finally discovered that "with the exception of academics, which I adore because I love to learn, the SGA has really been the thing I've been most passionate about." She used this passion to dive right into the realm of student government, fulfilling the positions of Sophomore Class President and then SGA Vice-President as well as sitting on numerous college and SGA committees.

Fresh off of her New York City summer art museum internship, Ambrus assumed her new role as soon as she set foot on campus. While most of us were toiling away the last few days of summer, Ambrus led a three-day retreat for the rest of the SGA cabinet; she also delivered a speech at the Welcome Panel to all incoming students and their families, alongside President Christ and Dean Mahoney.

While originally from Branchburg, New Jersey, Ambrus, like so many of us here, has found Smith to be her true home.

"I love this college," she said. "It's actually the first 'school' of any sort where I have felt completely happy. I love the academics and I love the people. Smith has given me so much, and I feel that the least I can do is try to use my knowledge of college matters to serve my fellow Smithies."

This positive outlook is hopeful for a college whose SGA she describes as "really exceptionally powerful in comparison to other colleges' student governments," and provides an obvious reason why Ambrus won last spring's tough election.

Of the campaign, Ambrus said it was only difficult for two reasons. One was having her "personal decisions and priorities discussed in a public forum," and the other was that she got sick in the middle of campaign week.
