Smith lacrosse ended their regular season with a 15-6 home game loss against Western New England College (WNEC) on Thursday, April 20.
WNEC got off to a good start by scoring the first two goals of the game. Smith's single goal in the half was scored by Lindsey Aldrich '08 and assisted by Elizabeth Nickle '06. Things began to look up for the Pioneers after they took a timeout late in the first half. Smith picked up their play and had several nice attacks on the WNEC goal. The half ended with a score of 6-1 in favor of the visiting team.
Then, at a little more than three minutes into the second half, Nickle scored with the help of Susan Parke-Sutherland '07, moving the score to 7-2. After two quick goals scored by WNEC, Smith began to come back, beginning with an unassisted goal by Sara Smyth '08 at the 20:41 mark. This was followed by goals from Blair Rapalyea '09. Smith closed the gap to five before WNEC called a timeout. However, that did not slow Smith down as Sarah Barksdale '07 scored.
Unfortunately, WNEC then proceeded to score six more goals. However, with 12 seconds left in the game, Parke-Sutherland passed to Danielle Schmandt '09 for one last goal.
Goalkeeper Sara Smith '08 played the entire game. She had 12 saves in the first half and 10 saves in the second half.
The Smith Pioneers Lacrosse team finishes its regular season with a record of 3-12. Smith is ranked seventh in NEWMAC and will move on to play in the NEWMAC Championship Quarterfinals at Wheaton College on April 27 at 4:30 p.m.
