UMass Awarded Grant to Aid Schools in Afghanistan
This past week the Center for International Education (CIE) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has been awarded a grant of $8.1 million to be received over the next five years. The university accepts the aid as a subcontractor on a U.S. Agency for International Development project to improve schools in Afghanistan. UMass is part of a consortium of national partners that will work with 16 Afghan schools of higher education over the next few years. The goal is to improve the capacity of the institutions to train secondary school teachers. Afghanistan's educational system has been destroyed by the political and physical strife the country has suffered over the past 25 years.
Amherst College Student Elections Deemed Invalid
Student elections at Amherst College were deemed invalid this past week due to possible tampering of the results. The school's elections committee chair deactivated the electronic polls hours before they were scheduled to close. Concerns arose over a technical error that could allow unauthorized students access to administrative privileges of online ballots. There is concern that this problem could have gone unnoticed for past elections. The election committee remains confident the technical workers will be able to track down anyone who could have tampered with the election. It is expected that any perpetrators will be referred to the Student Judiciary Committee.
