Jocelyn Briddell, Dean of Students at Douglass College, addresses Smith staff and students at an open forum for the position of Dean of Students in Dewey Hall on Monday, April 10.

Mela Dutka, Smith's dean of students, will be leaving her position here in May. A search committee is holding open forums on campus to interview four selected candidates for the position.

"They all have strong student life and teaching backgrounds," said Susan Briggs, assistant to the dean.

According to Briggs, the dean of students "oversees the offices of residential life, student activities, international students, multicultural affairs, health services and the Campus Center, and is responsible for leading the effort to integrate students' experiences outside the classroom with the educational mission of the college."

Students will have a voice in the selection process. Three students hold spots on the ten-person selection committee.

"We're counting on students attending the Open Forum scheduled for each candidate," Briggs said. "The candidates will talk briefly about themselves and their career path, and take questions from the audience. Everyone who attends the forums will have the opportunity to submit their comments and impressions of the candidates."

Ultimately, the search committee makes the final hiring decision, though the comment forms are avaliable for members of the Smith community to have an input in the decision.

According to Briggs, the new dean will begin work in July.

On Monday, April 10, candidate Jocelyn Briddell, dean of students at Rutgers University, Douglass College, spoke and fielded questions from students and staff in an open forum.

Douglass College is a women's college within Rutgers University.

"Women's education is needed more today than maybe some people are likely to believe," Briddell said. "Women's education makes us stronger in terms of who we are and our own self-esteem and confidence."

She also noted that it is becoming increasingly difficult for women to be admitted to college because 60 percent of applicants to college are women.
