Following the retirement of former Director and Founder Marian Macdonald, The Jacobson Center for Writing, Teaching, and Learning appointed Julio Alves as their new director on August 15th, 2005.

Alves, having worked under Macdonald as a writing counselor since 1990, has served as Acting Director of the Center since the fall of 2004 and previously in 2002.

"We have a very experienced, committed, and talented staff," said Alves. "Our goal is to continue to provide services as students and faculty have always known them."

Following his appointment as Director, Alves initiated The Working Writers Forum, a series of meetings which will discuss different methods of professional writing.

The Working Writers Forum will begin on October 3rd at 4:00pm with Andy Zimbalist's discussion on "The op-ed piece." The Forum will continue to run on the first Monday of every month and meet in Seelye Hall, room 207.

"We have to acknowledge that the majority of students will not become academics." Alves said. "We want to give them the opportunity to experience different kinds of writing."

According to Alves, "The Working Writers series introduces students to this kind of writing, writing that they might do throughout their lives to stay engaged with the world and exercise their minds."
