Recounting Four Years

Issue date: 5/13/05 Section: Opinion
The class of 2005 arrived in Northampton in the late summer of 2001 fresh-faced and eager. Within a few days, everything had changed with the attack on September 11, 2001. Smith students persisted through the political and international turmoil, through the invasion of Iraq and the longest presidential campaign season ever. On campus, things were much less tumultuous. A look back at some of Smith College's biggest moments in the past four years:

On February 23, 2002, ground was broken for the brand new Campus Center, designed by the New York firm Weiss/Manfredi Architects.

On May 19, 2002, pioneering law professor and civil rights champion Lani Guinier spoke at Commencement.

In September 2002, Smith became an entirely smoke-free campus for the first time, to the chagrin of smokers and the delight of lungs around campus.

On October 19, 2002, Carol Tecla Christ was inaugurated as President of Smith College in a ceremony held at the Indoor Track and Tennis Facility. Christ took over from Acting President and Professor of Philosophy John Connolly, who had assumed leadership of the College when President Ruth Simmons accepted a position at Brown University. Christ's inauguration was celebrated with a weekend full of activities, including an alumnae panel featuring Gloria Steinem '56 and Molly Ivins '66 and a poetry reading by the acclaimed Adrienne Rich.

In a rare occurrence, Northampton Mayor Claire Higgins served as speaker at the second semester convocation held on January 27, 2003.

The Brown Fine Arts Center reopened to the public on April 27, 2003. The complex had undergone a two-year, $35 million renovation and expansion designed by Polshek Partnership Architects. The Lyman Conservatory, originally designed by Lord and Burnham, reopened on May 9, 2003 after a two-year, $5 million renovation that included the modernization of all 12 greenhouses. Both the Brown Fine Arts Center and the Lyman Conservatory were honored with Historic Preservation Award given by the Northampton Historical Commission.
