Smith Sophomore Selected as Global Leader
Krystal Banzon '07 was recently selected as one of 20 undergraduates from the U.S. and Canada to be honored as a Goldman Sachs Global Leader. Banzon joins 100 new Global Leaders worldwide being honored for academic excellence and leadership achievements by The Goldman Sachs Foundation and its partner organization, the Institute of International Education. Banzon, a government and women's studies double major, is very involved in political activism and public service at Smith College. She is a STRIDE scholar, a participant in the Lewis Leadership Program and a co-founder of Smith Votes. Each Global Leader receives a $3,000 grant for educational expenses. In addition, 50 of this year's 100 Global Leaders, including 10 from U.S. and Canadian universities, will be selected to participate in the annual Goldman Sachs Global Leadership Institute this summer in New York City.
New Leader Selected for Kahn Institute
Professor of Sociology Rick Fantasia, an American labor movement researcher and onetime organizer, has been selected to lead the Kahn Liberal Arts Institute. Fantasia, who has been an assistant professor at Smith since 1982, will begin a five-year term as director of the Kahn Institute on July 1. He succeeds Marjorie Senechal, the Louise Wolf Kahn Professor in Mathematics and History of Science and Technology. The Kahn Institute supports interdisciplinary and collaborative research among faculty, students and visiting scholars through workshops and yearlong projects.
Annual Emily Dickinson Poetry Walk and concert commemorate poet's death
The Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst will sponsor the annual Emily Dickinson Poetry Walk on Saturday, May 14, at 1 p.m. The walk honors the memory of poet Emily Dickinson, who died on May 15, 1886. The event is free and open to the public. At 4 p.m., the museum and Amherst's First Congregational Church are co-sponsoring a special concert of Emily's poems set to music. The concert will take place in the sanctuary of the church, located at 165 Main Street, across from the Emily Dickinson Museum. Tickets for the concert are $10, or $5 for children and students.
