Orgs React to Restrictive Guest Policy

A policy that prohibits guests from sleeping in common areas on Smith campus has students across campus scrambling to arrange housing for conferences and events. The Residence Life office decided to change the previous housing policy last semester reportedly to respect house community, but many students believe the decision risks their safety and future student activities.

Tuition to Rise by 5.5 Percent

The Smith College Board of Trustees has approved a 5.5 percent increase in the college's comprehensive fees, effective for the 2005/2006 academic year. The total cost of attendance, including tuition and room and board, will be $41,024, an increase from the current academic year's $38,886.

Adrian Nicole LeBlanc '86 to lecture on Friday Creative nonfiction author Adrian Nicole LeBlanc '86 will talk about "Listening Between the Lines: Reflections on Becoming a Writer," as part of the "In Honor, In Thanks" recognizing the achievements of longtime staff member Marian Macdonald, who is retiring after nearly three decades of service to the college.

Smith to Host Chicano Student Forum Conference

The Student Government Association (SGA) and Nosotras will host the East Coast Chicano Student Forum (ECCSF) spring conference at Smith on April 8 and 9. The theme of the conference this year will be "Politics of Chican@ Expressions: The Art of Survival." (The @ symbol is used to include both the masculine and feminine ending of the word, and can be used interchangeably with "Chicano/a.

SGA Beat: Senate Prepares for Elections, Charters Orgs

During the meeting, Sophomore Class President Meg Ambrus '07 and SGA Vice President Emily Kalafarski '05 presented a proposed reform to the current qualifications to run for SGA Cabinet positions, allowing more positions to be open to sophomores. "There are currently only two positions sophomores can run for on Cabinet," said Ambrus.

Jessica F. Nicoll Named New Director of Smith Museum of Art

Following the retirement of former Smith College Museum of Art (SCMA) Director Suzannah Fabing, SCMA has named Jessica F. Nicoll '83 as its new director. As one of eight candidates, Nicoll was recommended to Provost Susan Borque and President Carol Christ by the search committee on March 7 and will be formally appointed as the new director on August 1.

Sen. Kennedy Speaks to College Students About Financial Aid

In a conference call on Tuesday, March 15, Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy (D) spoke with over a dozen students from colleges and universities around the country regarding the bipartisan Student Aid Reward (STAR) Act of 2005. Senator Kennedy plans to introduce the bill along with Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR), and Congressmen Tom Petri (R-WI) and George Miller (D-CA).

Buddhism Conference Offers Plethora of Events, Workshops

This weekend, from Thursday, April 7, through Monday, April 10, a variety of scholars, spiritual leaders and other professionals from throughout New England will converge on Smith campus for the conference "Women Practicing Buddhism: American Experiences." The conference, sponsored by Smith College, Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College and Sakyadhita (The International Association of Buddhist Women), will address a broad range of topics relating to women's experiences of Buddhism.
