Some say that living in the Valley provides one with ample opportunity to meet people, and since Valentine's Day is right around the corner, it was easy to notice those who had capitalized on the theory. After all, the Valley is home to the Five Colleges. Students from each of the colleges may try their romantic luck at the other nearby colleges in the area.
And it was at Amherst College that Christina Antoniou '07 met her boyfriend, Michael McGeeney '05. They met in early September through a mutual friend in Michael's fraternity. The first thing that they noticed about each other was that "we both have red hair," said Antoniou. They saw each other again the next weekend, and McGeeney worked up the nerve to ask her out. They had their first date at Fresh Pasta downtown. The rest, as they say, is history. Throughout their relationship they have almost always hung out in Northampton instead of Amherst.
"Smith is Michael's happy place ... he is not afraid of all the estrogen," explained Antoniou. Their favorite thing to do is just "to make each other laugh." When McGeeney tells a story, he is apparently very animated. "Michael likes to use his hands to illustrate a point. He enjoys creating a scene ... He really has a lot of humor and sarcasm that comes out as he talks," she said.
And how would McGeeney describe her? His favorite adjective for her is "amazing." He, in fact, cannot stop talking about how amazing she is.
Another reason why they fit so well together is that both McGeeney and Antoniou are government majors. Having so much in common is sometimes confusing, says Antoniou. "A lot of people think we're brother and sister because of our red hair ...we just think it's funny whenever people assume that."
One of their most memorable anecdotes took place as they were driving back from Amherst one evening. "I never thought Michael would be the type of person to run out of gas ... but of course it would happen at 2 a.m," Antoniou says of the situation that she describes as "ridiculously funny." They ended up having to call Triple A, and Antoniou actually fell asleep while they waited.
