"I became involved in V-Day because I like the idea of using theatre as a form of resistance," Alex Naugler '06, organizer of V-Day on Smith campus, said. On Monday, February 7, haircuts and manicures will be sold in the Campus Center as a fundraiser for this international day of creative resistance against violence towards women. V-Day centers around performances of "The Vagina Monologues," an ObieAward-winning play by Eve Ensler.
The first V-Day was on Valentine's Day, 1998. Ensler had toured the world with her play and, according to the V-Day website, "hundreds of women told her their stories of rape, incest, domestic battery and genital mutilation. It was clear that something widespread and dramatic needed to be done." In response, Ensler and other actors and musicians came together in New York City to perform Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" in order to "raise awareness and money to stop the abuse of women and girls." Internationally, V-Day is now celebrated in over 2,000 events.
This is the second year that Smith's V-Day has been organized by students. Naugler, organizer for those two years, said, "Having the show more in the hands of the students means something different than putting a staff member in charge."
This year, proceeds will go to Lunabar and the local organizations SAFER and CampaƱeras Womanshelter.
In years past, V-Day was mostly paid for out of the Student Activities budget. This year, according to Naugler, V-Day relies on "special funding through various college offices, and through fundraising activities." Previously, 100 percent of past fundraiser proceeds went to the V-Day beneficiaries. This year, it goes into production costs, which are estimated at $4,000. Fundraisers are expected to provide at least $2,000 to $3,000.
The Salon-a-Thon fundraiser will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Campus Center Carroll Room. DiGrigoli Salons will offer haircuts and manicures for $10 each. Appointments can be made in advance through the CC 106 office.
When asked if they were planning to attend the Salon-a-Thon, most students were ambivalent.
"I would go if they dyed hair, maybe," Doribel Tercero-Parker '08 said.
However, there is a greater interest in V-Day itself. "It's a good time for the event," Plamondon added, "considering the recent rape incident, especially since you usually think of men as the cause of violence towards women. It makes you think." "I love the Vagina Monologues," Cat Burgin '08 commented, "but I've only seen it done at MIT. It'll probably be better here!"
"'The Vagina Monologues' means something to people the first time that they see it," Naugler said. "It can be sort of revelatory."
