This year the Smith College Museum of Art has installed an exciting new program which gives any Smith student an opportunity to showcase her love of art. This program is the latest addition to the museum's already impressive effort to connect students on a personal level with the incredible collection of art that is available on campus. Ann Musser, curator of education at the museum, explained that the museum education team is "looking for ways to help students have what we refer to as 'Aha moments' that are relevant to their interests and needs, whether they be more academic, personal or both."
The program, "Student Picks," provides one student each month with the chance to exhibit her favorite photos, prints or drawings from the museum's collection. The collaborative brainchild of Musser's colleagues Henriette Kets de Vries and Taiga Ermansons is designed to introduce Smith students to the amazing breadth of celebrated works in our school's collection.
At the beginning of the academic year, students were invited to submit their names to the museum. Eight names were selected by Museum Director Jessica Nicoll, and those fortunate students are currently being scheduled to run an art exhibit during "Second Fridays" throughout the year.
In order to create her exhibit, each student will first become familiarized with the Cunningham Center for the Study of Prints, Drawings and Photographs, which houses over 18,000 works. Under the direction and assistance of Kets de Vries, the center's manager, students will be taught how to search the vast collection of works and will be provided with help preparing their choices.
According to Musser, "Student Picks" has been designed to "highlight one student's point-of-view," putting her in "the driver's seat." However, the opportunity to explore the museum's amazing collection is not limited to these student directors. The Cunningham Center invites any student who is interested to have a private viewing of her favorite work. All it takes is an e-mail to the Cunningham Center (ccenter@smith.edu) to be face-to-face with your favorite works of art, from Rembrandt to Warhol, and thousands of others in between.
Come and experience the "Student Picks" exhibit, available for viewing during Second Fridays from 4 to 6 p.m. at no charge.
